Ascension Day Ecumenical Hymn Festival

A Hymn Festival featuring Hymns from the Ascension of Christ was held at Wall Street United Church, Brockville, Sunday, May 8, 2005. Co-sponsors were the Royal School of Church Music, Eastern Ontario Branch and Wall Street United Church.

Conductor was Catherine Oxenford-Grant and organist was Peter Shepherd.

Hymns for the evening were compiled by Peter Shepherd, containing "public domain" music and also three descants composed by Peter Shepherd.

Prayers were said by Dr. Alan Bennett, minister at Wall St. United Church, Brockville; scriptures were read by Rev. Udall, minister at Lakeshore Drive United Church, Morrisburg and by Fraser Carr, Treasurer of the RSCM Eastern Ontario Branch. 

Ken Lacey of Wall St. United Church did a marvelous job with his computer expertise, projecting the entire service on the overheads.

Contingents from the following 9 choirs participated, making a total of approximately 50 choristers:

Lansdowne United Church            

Merrickville United Church

St. Francis Xavier R.C. Church, Brockville

St. Johns Anglican Church, Prescott

St. Mary’s R. C. Church, Williamstown

St. Paul’s United Church, Prescott

Wall St. United Church, Brockville

It was a very exhilarating and inspiring evening, especially for those who had not sung in a massed choir before.

Refreshments were served following the service.
