A Hymn Festival featuring the Hymns of James Montgomery was held at St. Thomas Anglican Church, Belleville, Sunday, Nov. 2nd, 2003 and was sponsored by the Royal School of Church Music, Eastern Ontario Branch.

Conductor was Rev. John Uttley and organist was Elizabeth Mitchell who rendered several choral preludes by Healey Willan on familiar hymn tunes.

Hymns for the evening were from throughout the Christian year.

Contingents from the following 5 choirs participated making a total of 30 choristers:

Christ Church, Belleville

Bridge Street United, Belleville

St. George's, Trenton

St. Mary Magdalene, Picton

St. Thomas, Belleville

Rev. John Uttley gave a wonderful address on the Life and Witness of James Montgomery (1771 - 1854).

James Montgomery was a Newspaper Editor, Social Activist and Hymn Writer.

The collection was taken for the very first time using our beautiful, RSCM collection plates.  These plates were especially handcrafted and donated to us by Jan Zalewski who lives in Bradford, Ontario.  He also made a beautiful box with a Royal Blue felt lining, for housing the collection plates.

Refreshments and a time for fellowship followed the Service.
