History and Philosophy
In 1927, the English School of Church Music was founded in Westminster Abbey by Sir Sydney Nicholson, Organist and Master of the Choristers and Members of the Church Music Society. Choirs from all over the country became affiliated. In 1945 the ESCM (English School of Church Music) received its royal designation and became the RSCM (Royal School of Church Music). RSCM has grown into an international organization, providing inspiration and guidance to more than 10,000 affiliated members from 6 continents. Our members are drawn from different denominations, they worship in different ways, they enjoy different musical styles, but what they have in common is the belief that good music, used effectively, greatly enriches Christian worship.
The RSCM is a non-profit organization devoted to promoting church music in all its aspects. It is ecumenical and exists to help organists, choir directors, singers, clergy and congregations with church music. Although the RSCM aims particularly to help the amateur and the beginner, professional church musicians will find that it offers much of unique value.
The RSCM has its worldwide headquarters at 19 The Close, Salisbury, Wiltshire, SP1 2EB, UK and we cordially invite you and your church to become affiliated with the Eastern Ontario Branch of the RSCM, where local representatives look after members' needs.
The Eastern Ontario Branch stretches West from the Quebec border along the North shore of Lake Ontario to Trenton and North to the Ottawa River.
