Ship category by size: What class each ship falls under is determined by overall length, width and sometimes by standard armament of that ship type. Escape pod (Small) (2 - 3m) - One or two person escape pods are common aboard most ships. Starfighter - Small one manned fighters of varying size. Generally considered insignificant in starship combat. Escape pod (Large) - Shuttle /Landing Craft / Gunship - Patrol Craft (50 - 90 m) * - The smallest class of ship capable of mounting jump drives. (Pre 5th Era) Gun/Missile Boat (100m) - Corvette (150-190m) - Fast lightly armed ships often used for cargo transport or as attack ships. Frigate (300 - 440m) - A support ship found in most fleets, they are lightly armed and tend to be used for cargo transport. They can be upgraded for use as attack ships. Attack Cruiser (500-700m) - Ships of this class are generally considered washouts of the light cruiser class. Faster than light cruisers they sacrifice either weapons or armour. 'Light' Cruiser class (450 - 1,250m) - This ships class makes up the core of most war fleets. Common sight the known universe. Assault Frigate / Battle Frigate (1,600m) - Mostly consisting of heavy freighters modified to carry military grade weapons. There are few if any purpose built ships of this class. 'Medium' Cruiser class (2,500m) - Smaller and with lighter Armour than the heavy cruiser, these ships were intended for mass production. 'Heavy' Cruiser class (5,000m +) - These ships formed the backbone of the older factions fleets. Armed with their fleets most advanced systems and weapons they are expensive to produce. Super Heavy Cruiser - Any ship exceeding 10,000m in any dimension is included in the super heavy cruiser class. |
