The Convict
Lover was published in Canada in April 1996
to enthusiastic reviews and immediately became
a national bestseller.
It was a finalist
for the Governor General's Literary Award for
Nonfiction and the Arthur Ellis Award for Nonfiction
and won a Talking Book of the Year Award. It was
named one of the best books of 1996 by The
Globe & Mail, Quill & Quire Magazine,
Elm Street Magazine, and Maclean’s
Magazine.
In 1997, the book
was adapted for the stage and workshopped in a
production at the Grand Theatre in Kingston, Ontario.
In 1998, it premiered in Toronto at Theatre Passe-Muraille,
where it played to sell-out audiences. It is currently
being developed as a feature film.
