A Description of the Banner

in the Chapel of

St. Paul's United Church, Prescott, ON

The Main Theme is the calling of the Apostles Peter and Andrew.

"As Jesus walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew, his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.  And I will make you fishers of men"

Matthew 4: 8, 19

The Three Central Figures are surrounded by rope in the shape of a fish: The fish has been a very important symbol for Christians.  The Greek word for fish is "ichthus"--I-ch-th-u-s.  These letters can stand for the Greek words "Iesous Christo Theou Uios Soter" = Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour.  This is the faith by which the church has lived through two thousand years.

At the TOP, on either side, is a trillium, the flower of Ontario, with it's three petals reminding us of the Godhead, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

BOTTOM LEFT: The Blockhouse of Fort Wellington, Prescott; a fort within the fort.  A reminder that "A Mighty Fortress is our God."

BOTTOM CENTRE:  The Ogdensburgh-Prescott bridge.  St. Paul wrote, "There is one God, and one mediator between God and man, the man Jesus Christ.  1 Timothy 2:5

The word "mediator" just means "bridge", and the one Bridge between God and us men and women is Jesus Christ,  He came as a bridge-builder in human relations, giving all His love and His life to deliver and redeem mankind.

BOTTOM RIGHT:  The Windmill tower at Windmill Point, east of Prescott, converted into a lighthouse.  This is symbolic of the wind of the Spirit: "The wind blows where it wills; you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from, or where it is going; so is everyone born of the Spirit" (John 3:8).  It also reminds us of Jesus, the Light of the world.  "I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." (John 8:12)
